Bike maintenance is a very tough skill, and it is not easy to learn. The job is highly skilled, and as technology advances, it gets more and more difficult for mechanics as they have so much more to learn to keep their clients safe when cycling.
If you are unsure of what you are doing, go to a professional do not attempt repairs yourself. It's easy to change a chain wrong, and it might end up breaking your rear derailleur hanger, then the derailleur goes into your rear wheel and makes you fall off the bike. Poor maintenance can have terrible consequences. I always recommend looking at your bike like you would a car. Understand they are similar in what they do and how they should be maintained.
Tire and Tubes
Although they might have all the gear, many cyclists struggle to change an inner-tube on a flat tire. There's nothing wrong with this. It can be a challenging job. Tires will rarely last you more than 4000k and still be efficient by this point. The older a tire gets, the more punctures you will get, the more inner tubes you will be going through. At the point-of-service, you might need new tires and maybe tubes. Go for good branded tires, and you will find they last much longer and give you many more miles.
A top-tip is to go tubeless instead of using tubes. A mechanic can set this up for you. It means instead of inner tubes, you will have sealant in your tires, which can self-heal, and if it needs light repairs, they are straightforward to do without having to take the wheel off.
Bike Chain, Cassette, and Chainrings
One of the most common repairs is to the drive chain of the bike. When the chain is worn, it will start to wear your cassette, and then it will start to wear your chainrings. When these are worn, your chain will slip, your gears won't change properly, and your bike will make an awful noise when pedaling. On a high-end road bike, changing your chain, cassette, chainrings is not a cheap repair. You can be looking at between $100 to $500.
A top-tip to prolong your chain, cassette, and chainrings would be to regularly change your chain. Chains need changing every 1500 miles roughly. If you were to change your chain at this time, it would protect your cassette and chainrings for much longer. Although you will have to spend money on the extra chains, your other components will last much longer, and in the long run, you will save money.
Brakes Discs and Brake Pads
It's very often seen in bike repair, brakes pads that are literally down to the metal. This is dangerous as your brakes become ineffective. Many cyclists don't know when their brakes are getting worse because it happens very progressively, and you often don't notice them getting worse and worse.
When your brakes need fixing, the mechanic will first check your brakes then test your discs and pads to see how much life they have left in them. Many people think discs on disc brakes last forever, but they don't. The same goes with pads, and these need to be regularly changed. Another common issue is the brake cable failing, bringing the brake pads closer to each other.
A tip to prolong the life of your brakes is to buy high-quality discs and pads and clean them regularly to keep the braking surface clean. Have them checked by a qualified mechanic often and get them fixed before they are useless.
Firmware
Firmware is something I commonly see on the road these days. A lot of high-end bikes now have electronic gearing. It is incredible, shifts fantastic, and self-adjusts for the user, but it can be harder to fix when it goes wrong. A prevalent issue is with firmware. There is nothing wrong with the gears, and they need an update every so often to keep them running correctly.
To avoid this, regularly plug your bike plugged into a laptop at home or a bicycle repair shop and keep everything updated and working properly.
Being a cyclist is a lot of fun, and everyone should experience the joy of a good bike ride. Riding your bike can be a new adventure every time and add years to our lives. It helps us make new friends and have something to do. Our bicycles give us a lot of love, but we need to give some back in the form of maintenance.
We maintain our bikes for many reasons, and it is a vital part of being a cyclist. Sometimes, it can feel like an unfortunate expense, but we must do it. We will be providing ourselves with a better riding experience!
Safety
Not maintaining your bikes is unsafe your yourself and other road users. If you neglect your bicycle, you could find your chain slipping, pulling your feet off the pedals, causing you to fall off. The tires could give you a lot of punctures or, even worse, blow out. You could find yourself stranded with a broken bike with no use of gears. All these things and much more could cause you to fall and hurt yourself or other people you may be cycling with or even pedestrians.
Enjoyment
Nobody likes a bike that slips gears, makes awful noises & sounds like it is falling apart. I think it ruins a ride. The last thing in a group ride you want to hear is an unoiled chain or a creaky bottom bracket. It is a bit embarrassing, and it is easy to get fixed.
Performance
It is obvious to say that a well-oiled chain is going to perform better than a chain with no oil. The same goes with a fresh chain on a fresh cassette. Keeping your bike up to date on the maintenance will make you much faster and may give you the edge in a final sprint on a race.
Pride
It is crucial to be proud of your bike, and maintaining it is essential. Keeping your bike clean and ensuring your parts are working efficiently is vital to being a safe cyclist. Just like classic car lovers who are constantly washing and repairing parts that are not broken, we should be doing this to our bikes too.
Resale
It is essential to maintain your bike for resale purposes. When you look at bikes secondhand, the last thing you want to see is an entirely rusted chain and cassette. It shows me nothing on that bike has been maintained, and they are selling it because it is starting to have issues. Although it might get you a cheap bike, you will get a lot of trouble from it and a hefty repair bill after.
General maintenance will address common components the majority of bikes have such as...
Different maintenance procedures are required for various bikes. All bicycles are notthe same, and as much as general service will help, some bikes need particular extra care. The type of bike you have will tell us the special attention it will need.
It is essential to make sure your bike gets the care and attention it needs. It will keep you safe, and the bike is working as it should do. You can get put-off cycling if your bike keeps letting you down, and that is the last thing you want.
E-bikes come in many shapes and sizes in themselves. You can get one that looks like a road, gravel, mountain, or even hybrid bike. They are assisted by an electric motor which helps the user get up hills or go faster on the flats. They are great for people who live in very hilly areas, people who fancy riding with a quick group and not wanting to hold anyone back, and also people who want to commute and not get to work without being sweaty.
What extra things do we have to think about when maintaining an e-bike?
Maintaining e-bikes is a much harder job than most people think. Firstly, the mechanic will need to look at the battery's health. It's very common for people to leave the battery charged fully or empty for long periods, which isn't good for the bike. Checking the battery's health will tell us if the owner needs to invest in a new battery.
Then we have to look at the bike's current waterproofing. We must make sure the waterproofing is still intact and does its intended job. It can be catastrophic for the bike if you get water ingress. Commonly, a bike mechanic will have the battery out, check the seals, and clean all the contacts to ensure that the bike stays in complete working order until the next service.
E-bikes are very powerful, and we have to take a bit of time to check the components like the belt or chain still have a lot of life left in them. If you think you could be giving 200 watts to the bike in your legs, then the bike could give you an extra 250 watts. That's a tremendous amount of power, and we need to make sure the bike can take that safety.
Finally, one thing we need to focus on with the electric bike is the bike's firmware. E-bikes will need to be plugged in every so often for an update. Companies like Trek and Specialized Bikes are so advanced that they regularly make changes that help the bike work more efficiently. You can only update the bike to these changes by plugging it into a laptop. If you need to get an e-bike fixed go to an e-bike repair shop
Specialized repair is usually required.
E-bikes are now all the rage and with the purchase of an e-bike comes some special needed repair. Whether it is the heavy-duty derailleurs, disk brakes, or the tubeless tires that need adjusting we can come to your home, fix and service your e-bike so you no longer will need to worry about its mechanics. You will be confident that the repair completed will get you off and running. Whether it's an e-bike used for mountain biking, commuting, or simply riding on a bicycle trail. E-bikes are fast becoming the commuter choice electric bicycle for efficient yet healthy travel in a city, as well as country tourist choice for getting exercise while simultaneously enjoying the great outdoors. Electric bicycles are partially propelled by a charged electric-assist bicycle motor which means it is easier to climb up hills and ride to a location using both human power as well as an electric motor for assist.
These e-bikes are also helpful for the elderly. They allow exercise to be motor-assisted so cycling isn't such a strain. They are also very helpful when commuting to a workplace that requires traversing hilly terrain. Simply use the assist motor so you won't sweat your head off while commuting to work.

A gravel bike is described in many ways, and I see it as a great mix between road and off-road bikes. They come in many shapes and sizes but often resemble a road bike with larger tires or a mountain bike with drop bars and no suspension typically. They are a great do-it-all bike, which is fast on-road or off-road and a vast amount of fun.
What extra things do we have to think about when maintaining a gravel bike?
Gravel bikes are very good at doing a lot of types of riding, and because of this, the bike needs special attention given to it in certain areas. Gravel bikes have high-performance parts on which do end up taking a lot of abuse off-road.
When we look at gravel bikes, we need to look at the components close to ensure the dirt and muck haven't got into them. The last thing you want on your carbon wheels is to get soil in your sealed bearings. Special attention needs to be given to gravel bikes on the inspection.
Many gravel bikes run road racing components which can take a certain amount of dirt but not the amount many gravel bikes see. We need to regularly check the chain and cassette and make sure the brakes cables haven't been snagged at any point.
Gravel bikes are becoming the new norm.
With both bicycles and cars on the road with impatient drivers, road riding on a road bike or e-bike has become dangerous. This is where the gravel bike comes into play. Wider tires on a gravel bike make it easier to navigate both off and on the roads. Gravel bikes are also engineered a little differently and add some comfort to the ride. Now because of this new type of bicycle gravel bikes have opened up the areas where cycling may not have previously been possible. This type of cycling has created a whole new repair industry.
Our mobile repair shop can fix all kinds of gravel bikes, carbon to aluminum, and electric or cable shifting. We carry gravel tires, from folding tubeless tires to tires with beads and tubes as well. Our expert gravel bike repair service is sure to fit any need you have for your gravel bicycle machine.
You will commonly see a road bike being ridden on the road. It will be very light, Aerodynamic and fast. Think Tour De France or La Giro D Italia. A good indicator that it is a road bike is that it will have drop bars and skinny tires. Road bikes, on the surface, seem very simple, but they have a lot of technology that makes them unique to maintain.
What extra things do we have to think about when maintaining a road bike.
Road bikes have very high-performance parts on them, and these will need checking and maintaining more than other bikes. For example, the bike Frame is often lightweight Carbon Fiber and will need checking all over to make sure there are no cracks or any wear and tear.
The next thing we have on road bikes is very lightweight performance wheels, and these will need checking to make sure they are all straight and true. Wheels on road bikes have much less protection in the tires, so we need to focus our attention here a lot more. Also, we look for play in the wheels, high-performance road bearings are common to wear out fast and must be inspected often.
Finally, we look at the bike overall and make sure everything is nice and tight together and torqued up properly. These Raod bikes are very fast, and checking all the bolts and parts are tight is so crucial to your safety. Having a loose brake on a big descent could be fatal.
What has changed?
Road bike repair and maintenance changed dramatically in the last 15 years. Before 2010, most bikes were all cable-driven and manual shifting. They had at most 10 different gears in the back and the brakes on all models were all fairly similar in design.
In retrospect, bicycles now are completely different from old-style cable models. Many use electronic, or blue tooth shifters. Complicating matters more is the fact that most bicycles use disk brakes and hydraulic cylinders in brake design. Maintenance takes a special mechanic because road bikes are no longer simple and standard. From maintenance on old-style Reynolds 531 bicycle frames to new electric-shift carbon road bikes. Our mobile shop is equipped to build, tune, repair, or replace components, cables, and bearings on all makes of road bikes from old to brand new. Contact us and we will get you back out riding again on your road bicycle.
What is a Mountain Bike?
Simply a mountain bike is a bike made for mountains and off-road terrain. They will have suspension components for the lumps, big chunky tires with low tire pressure for grip, and big wide flat bars, and an out-front brake lever for control. They are a lot of fun but do have a considerable amount of extra parts on them compared to a road bike, because of this, we will need to give a mountain bike special attention.
What extra things do we have to think about when maintaining a mountain bike?
Apart from the general serving of mountain bikes, we need to look at the suspension. Suspension on mountain bikes is not cheap and does need regular attention. Your front suspension needs to be checked for pitting on the forks, and we need to test the travel and rebound. The check varies depending on the fork type, for example, coil or air. The rear suspension we have a similar process but might require more attention as there are many types of these shocks.
Then we have brakes. Brakes are essential on every bike, but on mountain bikes, they are more than crucial. Mountain bikes have a much harder job when it comes to stopping as steep descents, and the loose ground is prevalent off-road. They will mostly have hydraulic discs brakes and be huge. We have to give special attention here to make sure the hydraulic fluid housing is in excellent condition and that the brakes discs and pads have plenty of life left in them.
We also need to look at other parts of the bike closer, such as some mountain bikes with fork lockouts and dropper posts. We need to make sure they are in good working order and will not fail you at any time. Then as the same as the road bike, we need to make sure everything is tight and torqued up correctly as these mountain bikes take a tremendous amount of abuse off-road and need to be safe for the mountain biker.
How is a mountain bike different?
Mountain bike maintenance, repair, and parts are very different from traditional road bikes, gravel bikes, and e-bikes. Mountain bikes are comprised of extra components which help soften an otherwise bumpy ride. These components along with dampening fork shocks and frame hinges and frame suspension all require a special level of knowledge when adjusting and maintenance come into play. Skill in mountain bike maintenance and repair is fairly specialized. Not only do these shocks need to be rebuilt occasionally by an expert in shock rebuilds, but they are also adjusted very differently -usually these adjustments are dependent on the weight and terrain of the rider who owns the mountain bike. These variables make it important that you choose a professional mountain bike repair company that understands these specialty bikes and all their nuances.
Mountain bikes are very popular in today’s day and age, and with our expert maintenance knowledge, we can keep your mountain bike in tip-top tune-up shape. We adjust all kinds of mountain bike gears, brakes & shocks. Whether you have a hardtail mountain bike with only a fork shock or a full-suspension machine we will be able to tune, adjust and tweak all your gears and shock settings to give you the perfect mountain bike experience.
